ABOUT HELSINKI
Weather & daylight
December brings below-freezing weather to Helsinki, Finland. As winter begins its fiercest days, the daily temperature averages at -4°C. The average high temperature is 0°C, while the low is a cold -7°C. View weather forecast times .

Time Zone & Daylight
The time zone in Finland is EET, UTC/GMT +2 hours. December sees short days, you can expect it to be light out during EUSW between 09:00 – 15:30. We advise you to wear an appropriate reflector when walking on darker roads. View sunrise & sunset times .

Currency & Money
The official currency in Finland is the euro (€). The most commonly used cards, such as Visa and Mastercard, are accepted practically everywhere. ATMs can be found easily throughout Helsinki.

Public transportation
With a single ticket, you can hop aboard trams, busses, the metro and even the ferry to Suomenlinna. Single tickets can be purchased from ticket machines, R-kiosks and other HSL sales points or by using HSL mobile application. On buses, you can also buy your ticket from the driver.

Day tickets are available for unlimited use on public transportation for 1-7 days. They can be purchased from ticket machines, from the Tourist Information at Helsinki Airport Terminal 2A (1-3 days) or from the Helsinki City Transport service point in the Central Railway Station. One day ticket is also sold by the drivers.

Regional tickets allow the holder to travel freely in Helsinki, Espoo, Kauniainen and Vantaa. Regional tickets and regional tourist tickets can be purchased eg. from ticket machines.
Helsinki Card holders can travel free of charge on public transportation within the city.

Pharmacy & medical care
There are a number of pharmacies around the city. Look for the sign “Apteekki”, which means pharmacy in Finnish. Yliopiston Apteekki at Mannerheimintie 96 is open 24/7.

Tipping
Tipping is not expected in Finland and a service charge is added in hotels and restaurants. Finnish people do tip (max 10%) only if they wish to appreciate good service or delicious food. It is not obligatory to give a tip to the taxi drivers.

Language
Finland has two official languages, Finnish and Swedish. Street signs in Helsinki are in both languages. English is widely spoken and most Finns also master one or two other foreign languages.
